Tax Refund ???, the chicken or the egg?
Ok people. I just have question. Brent and I have thought about living it up and drinking and being merry with our tax refund money, but thought better of it. So, this is where you all come in. We are thinking of replacing these OLD LEAKY windows, that I have to cover with plastic in the winter in hopes of saving on our heating bill next winter. We have also thought about trying to install a wood stove in the basement for an alternative source of heat since heating oil is just plain expensive (more expensive than what you put in your car.) So, what do you guys think?

Do windows first and do the wood stove anyway and make payments on it. It will pay for itself. I would do the kind in the basement hooked into the heating system because it will heat the whole house with no problem. I love looking at my fire in my woodstove upstairs, but it only heats that room.
I say windows too. Did I tell you the stuff the siding company guy told us? (Facts provided by the power company, not made up by the siding company.) He said that if we are spending $200/month on energy costs right now, and if we put in new windows (which for us would be about $12,000--ouch!) then we would save $1000/year for the next 10 years, or something like that. It was a pretty incredible statistic--almost enough to make me want to do it! Too bad the new roof I need worse won't save any money!!
PS--our tax refund is almost exactly the right amount of money to replace our soffits & fascia & gutters. Can you say TENDER MERCY???
And that's not counting Bush's stimulus package refund---which should help with the wedding costs!!
yes, our refund will be almost exactly what it will be to do all the windows on our main floor. We plan to use it for that because it would take a while to save up a lump sum like that. I hope it helps on our heating. I don't think our outer walls are insulated (old building), but I guess when your curtains blow in the breeze when the windows are closed is a pretty good indicator that your windows are leaking away your $$. Plus, just so you know, the really scary window in the picture IS NOT one of mine!!!
burn the money in the stove!!
So funny, Ben! Our tax return is roughly the cost of a kick in the pants.
Sorry Amber. I guess that is the blessing of less money and more kids. Have fun with your kick! We got kicked from Delaware and Pennsylvania,so don't feel too depressed.
That's the price of ownership, I guess. Maybe now that we're working for the man things will look better around tax refund time next year.
