Fatal Addiction

I finally get it. It only took being married 18 years and being broke! I fianlly understand why Dad and Mom used to can can can like crazy people. For all of my life, I have avidly avoided canning anything but peaches and jam (because I love how they taste). But now I have entered an entirely new phase in my life where I will can ANYTHING that is free! The reason? Because then I don't have to BUY IT!!!! I just can't believe it took me this long to understand why mom and dad did what they did!
Yesterday, I had a friend and a half (one had only one good arm to use because one was terribly broken) come over and help me can some really ripe pears that we were given by the fruit farm where Robby is working part time. We had one camp stove going on the back porch with 2 canners, and one going inside. We started at about 10:30 am and finished at 5:15 and got 84 quarts of pears done!
Alone, I could have only done 20-25 in one day, so this worked out great! Now I am in a desperate search for more canning jars!!!!!

That is soooo cool! I remember when we went with Cindy's family picking apples for free. It was so fun! Then we went back to your parents house and made some applesauce and apple butter. Then when we got home, I made more! I wish I could get some more free apples!
I have canning jars someone gave me years ago. You could come pick them up!

I suppose you mean "fatal" in a non-literal sort of meaning, right? That might not be quite as appealing!

No, really, I did plenty of appealing!

Oh yum Andra--I am so jealous! I want to can pears! I want free pears! Jeannie, I just e-mailed Lindsay Shelton to see if she knows of anyone with free apples....

I keep hoping that Robby will continue to bring home more free fruit for the rest of the packing season. Not that I have ANY more canning jars since I just purchased and filled 2 more dozen bottles with apple pie filling yesterday.....

Andra-I'll make you a deal. I'll give you my neglected jars from this canning season in exchange for a jar or two of your beautiful pears!!
