scientific exploration

hey everyone. Hunters birthday party is this weekend and I thought it would be fun to be scientists. One idea I has was to have a scavenger hunt (which Hunter loves) and find the ingredients to make a volcano, and have the volcano at the end for them to "explode." Another idea was for them to be able to mix up their own colored icing so they can explore which colors make which colors. Maybe I will only provide red, yellow, and blue. then they can decorate their own individual cupcakes with their icing. There are only going to be 5 kids. Do you have any other ideas for me? Please let me know.

I think you should do both! The kids will enjoy doing both things, but I think they will enjoy the volcano the most!

We did something similar for Jacob a few years ago but instead of scientists they were detectives.
They found clues and I think the first one came after someone mysteriously rang the doorbell and left a manila envelope with the start of the clues. At some of the clues they received "prizes" they could take home to keep like a little flashlight, disguise glasses, and a name badge. We had a "Bomb" cake on a flat square cake. You could have a "volcano cake" and also do a volcano you set off separately. If you want them to mix colors of something they could mix paint and either paint individual pictures or one huge volcano you could make on paper on the wall. Anyway have fun!

Laila, my kids LOVE food coloring! I think that it would be great fun for them to be able to mix their own frosting color.

I also think that everyone loves a good volcano...sigh...I need to go back to Hawaii to see the volcano!

These are all great ideas. Thank goodness for family blogs! Maybe we will actually be able to pull this birthday off after all!

Have them all play the pound of pure sodium in the gallon of water science trick. They'll have a BLAST!!

Bring plenty of glue to reattach any, um, body parts.

Funny, very funny. How about I fill a balloon with pure hydrogen instead of helium and let them pop it using fire! Now,there is a birthday party that would go out with a bang!
